"How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong, because some day in life, you will have been all these." -Geo. W. Carver

Welcome to Carversfriends.org, the on-line home of the George Washington Carver Birthplace Association!

George Washington Carver is a true American hero: a world-renowned inventor and educator; a talented artist and musician; and a first-class humanitarian who would correspond with Mahatma Gandhi.  George Washington Carver dedicated his life to bringing "scientific agriculture" to the American South and to improving the health and living conditions of the American farmer with whom he is most associated.  Recognizing the singular role played by Dr. Carver in American life, the George Washington Carver Birthplace Association (CBA) was formed in the early 1940's with Dr. Carver's support to honor and build upon his work as a Scientist, Educator, and Humanitarian.  Today, CBA continues its work through its support of myriad educational, interpretative, and artistic programs at George Washington Carver National Monument, and its outreach programs that seek to share Dr. Carver's story across the nation and world.

Established by Congress in 1943 as a unit of the National Park System, George Washington Carver National Monument exists for the benefit of the people of the United States as a suitable and enduring public memorial to George Washington Carver.  Located in Diamond, Missouri, Carver National Monument was the first National Monument dedicated to an American for services to Agriculture; the first established for an African-American; the first for an American Educator; the first National Park Service Memorial recognizing world peace through interracial understanding; and the first National Birthplace Monument honoring anyone other than a U.S. President.

In over 60 years of partnership, CBA has provided a number of services, such as sponsoring speakers/artists for various park events; acquiring funding for recycling exhibits; acquiring and then donating to the National Park Service the final 30 acres of the original Moses Carver Farm, making the birthplace and childhood home complete for the first time in many, many years.  CBA also funded the Carver Oral History Project which collected for posterity the stories of Carver colleagues, students, and their family members.  Through the programs we assist, CBA makes a difference in the lives of individuals and society writ large.  Annual Programs such as Carver Day and Prairie Day, and those aimed at the young (Carver Art and Essay Contest and the George Washington Carver Scholarship) were joined in 2008 by the Inaugural Symposium on George Washington Carver and His Life and Times.  Modeled after the Lincoln Forum, the purpose of the Carver Symposium is to encourage inquiry and promote discourse about Carver, his social and physical environments, and to explore how a better understanding of his life and times can illuminate modern issues.

We invite you to consider supporting CBA; membership in CBA is open to individuals and organizations.  CBA is a national non-profit corporation with IRS 501 (c) (3) status.  Please explore our site to learn more about the activities, opportunities, and accomplishments of the George Washington Carver Birthplace Association!
