George Washington Carver Memorial Highway
In February of 2003, Missouri State Senator Gary Nodler introduced Senate Bill 697 along with 19 other Senators to create the George Washington Carver Memorial Highway along a portion of Interstate 44 within Newton and Jasper Counties. Shortly thereafter, Missouri State Representative Marilyn Ruestman worked to have the same bill passed in the Missouri House. On May 21, 2003, both the Speaker of the Missouri House and the Missouri Senate President signed and forwarded this outstanding legislation honoring Dr. Carver to the Governor for signature. It was our distinct honor to have Senator Nodler, Representative Ruestman, and Missouri Governor Bob Holden join the 60th Anniversary Celebration at the Monument to sign this historic legislation into law. Missouri Governor Bob Holden signed several copies of George Washington Carver Memorial Highway legislation while participating in the July 12, 2003, ceremony and provided them to many of our guests. We are pleased to report that through your generous support the new George Washington Carver Memorial Highway signs are up! The Association provided funding for the state to build and install the new signs. You can see the new memorial highway signs as you enter Missouri from Oklahoma near the welcome center and shortly after you enter Jasper County from the Springfield area.
